Olivia Munn disclosed that she had a breast cancer diagnosis in 2023 but decided to wait a year to disclose the information.
The former star of The Newsroom described how her luminal B cancer was found and the reasons for her decision to keep the knowledge private until now in an open letter she posted to Instagram in March 2024.

In an Instagram post on March 13, 2024, the X-Men: Apocalypse actress recalled the day her cancer was found.
Olivia started, «In February 2023, I took a genetic test that checks you for 90 different cancer genes in an effort to be proactive about my health.»
«I was given a breast cancer diagnosis two months later. I’ve had four surgeries in the last 10 months, and I’ve spent so many days in bed that I lost track.Remarkably, I’ve only shed two tears.
When I’m feeling energetic, when I can get dressed and leave the house, or when I can take my little kid to the park, I usually let people see me. I have retained the diagnosis, the anxiety, the discomfort, and the recuperation.
Olivia stated that she «needed to catch [her] breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing» the news of her cancer diagnosis with the public.
Olivia went on, «If it weren’t for my OBGYN, Dr. Thais Aliabadi, deciding to calculate my breast cancer risk assessment score,
I wouldn’t have discovered my cancer until another year—at my next scheduled mammogram.» «The fact that she did saved my life,» Olivia said.
Following a review of multiple factors, including a family history of cancer and having a kid over 30, the physician concluded Olivia had a 37 percent «lifetime risk.»
Olivia clarified, «I was sent for an MRI because of that score, which led to an ultrasound, which led to a biopsy. My two breasts were found to have luminal B cancer after a biopsy.
Luminal B is a rapidly progressing and aggressive malignancy. My double mastectomy took place thirty days following the biopsy. After a 10-hour procedure, I woke up in a hospital bed the day after feeling perfectly well the day before.
Olivia added that she and her doctor «caught it with enough time that [she] had options,» which makes her feel «lucky.» «I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day,» Olivia wrote at the conclusion of her message.
Luminal B Cancer: What Is It?
Luminal B «expresses estrogen or progesterone (or both) hormone receptors (HR)» and «doesn’t express human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) proteins,» according to cancercenter.com, the online cancer resource of City of Hope.
